Workshop: Achieving Goals using Self-Hypnosis

When you go on a road trip, do you just start driving, hoping you will eventually get to your destination? Or do you look at a road map and plan your journey?

When you live your life, do you blindly stumble around, or do you make plans and achieve them?

Too often we just let life happen to us and then we are surprised when things don't turn out well.

Luckily help is at hand. You can learn how to set goals, how to prioritise and how to achieve them, using self-hypnosis. And the best part is that all of this can be learned in one day.

Hypnosis Works! is presenting a one day workshop in Goal Setting using Self Hypnosis. This will be held on Sunday 20 January. The workshop starts at 09h00 and ends at 17h00, and includes a light vegetarian lunch.

The workshop starts by learning all about hypnosis and how it works. Participants will then be taught how to hypnotise themselves and will have lots of opportunity to practice this new technique.

Attention will be given to goal setting, whether it be short, medium or long term goals. Focus will be given to various goals, whether they be achievements, possessions, characteristics, projects and changes, while a distinction between personal and family goals will be drawn.

Using the newly learned self-hypnosis technique, these goals will them be prioritised. To end it off, workshop participants will learn how to develop affirmations and they will receive instruction on how to achieve the goals using self-hypnosis..

At the end of the workshop, participants will have a very powerful self hypnosis technique that will help them to obtain their goals through very specific affirmations.

Hendrik Baird, the Consulting Hypnotist who will be presenting the workshop, says: "It is my mission to teach self-hypnosis to as many people as possible, as it is an essential skill that we all need to master to help improve our lives for the better."

The cost of the workshop is R 750 for the day. There is a limited number of seats available. The workshop will be presented in the tranquil surroundings of the Hypnosis Works! Personal Development Centre in Villieria, in Pretoria.

How Hypnosis has changed my life.

I have been wondering how to approach today's blog. What can I say that would help my readers understand hypnosis more and get them to actually use the power of their subconscious mind?

I started this blog as a way to reach out to the people of South Africa, to help them overcome their fears about hypnosis, to demystify the processes we use. Looking at the feedback, I realise that the readers are from all over the world, and that the interest in hypnosis comes from all over.

I am glad to be of some little help for people who may be looking for answers, who may be considering using hypnosis as a tool to help them overcome their problems.

I have been in full time practice for almost a year now, and during this time I have learned so much, not just about myself, but about people's inherent ability to change. I have seen clients who have had major issues to deal with, who have almost lost all hope, who have exhausted other ways. They have seen doctors, they have consulted psychologists, and as a last resort, they would call me.

And how many times have I seen how just a first session could be of tremendous help to people to recognise that they answers they seeked were within them all along!

I have seen people walk away with a completely different attitude, a different point of view, after only two or three sessions.People who were severely depressed, feeling lighter, more able to face the world on their own terms. Obese people who found the reason why they have been carrying all that weight around for so many years and the motivation to drastically reduce their size. Smokers who have seen that there are other things to do, apart from slowly poisoning themselves with over 4000 deadly chemicals.

Yes, I have seen these things and I talk about the miracles I witness every day. Miracles achieved by my clients, not because of me, but because they were ready to start making these changes.

And have I changed in the process? Certainly!

As I am almost always in a light trance during a session with a client, most of the suggestions have rubbed off on me too, and I am a better man for that reason. Calmer, more centered, more in tune with my body, my thought patterns and my life.

I cannot recommend hypnosis too highly. It really can be a life changing experience. And it can start today. If today is the day you want to be better.

It only asks that you make an appointment with a qualified, experienced Consulting Hypnotist or Hypnotherapist. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

"Hypnosis" does not exist!

There is no such thing as hypnosis!

There. I've said it.

So then how can I call myself a Hypnotist when there is no such thing as hypnosis?

The problem is with the word "Hypnosis" itself and the expectations people have of that word.

Imagine: A slightly creepy, eerie looking man, with a goatee, and dark, piercing eyes. He ominously swings a pendulum in front of his victim's eyes. She falls fast asleep, deep under his spell. He commands her to do things and she has lost her free will, she obeys his every word. He takes control of her mind, he controls her. And if he so chooses, she will never wake up...

Sound a bit like your expectation of hypnosis?

Rest assured, nothing could be further from the truth!

The word "hypnosis" was coined by a Scottish surgeon in the 1800's, Dr James Braid. He saw that his patients were sleeping and used the Greek word for sleep, hypnos, to describe what had previously been called Mesmerism.Of course he soon realised that his clients were not asleep, just concentrating intently on the one idea he was presenting them with, and he tried changing the term to mono-ideaism. The word hypnosis was by this time however well established, and we continue to use it today.

The modern concept of a Svengali-type figure controlling his victim comes from  a fictional character in George du Maurier's 1894 novel Trilby. He is a hypnotist who makes the title character into a famous singer.

The word "svengali" has come to refer to a person who, sometimes with evil intent, controls another person by persuasion or deceit. The Svengali may feign kindness and use manipulation to get the other person to yield his or her authority.

I can confidently say that I have never hypnotised anybody. To think that you can control another person and force them to do things against their will, to control their minds, is pure fiction.

The only person who can hypnotise you is yourself!

In other words, if you listen to the suggestions given to you and follow the instructions, you will place yourself in that relaxed state of concentration that is commonly known as hypnosis. The "hypnotist" acts only as your guide, showing you the route you must take to get to your destination.

You are free to follow the suggestions or reject them, as you always have free will.

If I therefore say that hypnosis does not exist, I do not mean that you cannot make changes in a relatively short time using the power of suggestion. I am saying that your misconception of what actually happens, based on popular culture and stage demonstrations, are untrue.

The only way to truly understand what it is and how to do it, is to visit your local hypnotherpist or consulting hypnotist, and try it out for yourself. Like most of my clients, you will end up saying: "It's not at all what I expected it to be!"

And that's a good thing.

For more information, visit

"I don't believe in Hypnosis!"

Some people say they will not go for hypnosis, because they do not believe in it.

My first (flippant) answer is always: "Well, thank goodness for that, as hypnosis is not a religion."

Having thought about this for some time, I have found that belief does actually play a big role in the success of hypnosis.

You have to believe that it is going to work!

It is just like when you pop a pill for the flu, you believe that it is going to work, isn't it? And what if your doctor gave you a sugar pill and you popped it? Research has shown that people get better, even if the pill has no medicinal effect at all.

It is called the placebo effect. Believe it will work, and it most probably will.

Hypnosis works the same way. When you come to a hypnosis session, you have to have some faith in the fact that it is going to work for you. This creates a situation where you are willing to make changes. The suggestions given to you during the hypnotic process will then help you to make those changes.

"Whatever the mind can conceive, and if you believe, the mind can achieve."

Want to come for a stop smoking session but you firmly believe it is not going to work? Chances are you are not in the right frame of mind for it to work!

Come to a stop smoking session firmly believing that today is the day you throw away those cigarettes? Guess what?

So while hypnosis is not a belief system, there is a certain amount of belief required. Of course the skill of your Hypnotist also plays a role.Sometimes a skillful talker can talk us into doing something we did not expect!

So choose you Hypnotist careful, ask around, find out what other people are saying about him or her. And when you do go for your appointment, have some belief in yourself!

Because it's true: Hypnosis Works!

Have faith.

Can I be Hypnotised?

The most frequently asked question I encounter is: "Can everybody be hypnotised?"

In order to answer that question, let's first look at what hypnosis is.

The definition of hypnosis is "the bypass of the critical factor of the conscious mind and the establishment of acceptable information."

The critical factor is that part of the mind that judges everything, and it is formed through experience. We are continually weighing the information coming to us based on our past experiences and we accept and reject that information based on whether it makes us feel comfortable or uncomfortable.

For instance, a smoker who has smoked 20 cigarettes every day for 10 years will firmly be of the opinion that it is too difficult to stop smoking and any conscious suggestions that it is easy to stop smoking will be instantly rejected by the critical factor.

Experience has taught the smoker that he needs the cigarettes to relax, to feel better, indeed to survice. Repetition has imprinted that negative belief firmly into the subconscious mind and no matter how hard he or she may try, the smoker will feel decidedly uncomfortable when he or she consciously tries to stop smoking, because there is a deep-seated belief that cigarettes are necessary for survival.

No suggestions given in the normal, wakeful state will sound acceptable.

During hypnosis the critical factor of the conscious mind gets bypassed. This is done through a process of relaxation. The client will relax to the point where the critical factor goes "out of the way" and the subconscious mind becomes receptive to new ideas.

Give the client those acceptable suggestions, and changes follow very quickly.

So - can everybody be hypnotised?

I believe two things are required for a person to go into hypnosis.

Relaxation and concentration.

If you can relax yourself to a specific point and then concentrate on the words that are spoken, you are in hypnosis and positive changes can start taking place.

The only people who will not be able to be hypnotised are people who are intellectually challenged, who cannot understand what is said and who are unable to follow instructions.

So, if you have been reading this and have had no idea what these scribbles meant, then I am sorry to say hypnosis will not work for you.

If however you got this far and the words have made some sort of sense to you, rest assured: Hypnosis Works!

The best way to find out if hypnosis will work for you is to book an appointment and try it out for yourself. I can almost guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised by the results!

Memory Improvement with Hypnosis

Memory Improvement with Hypnosis

The biggest obstacle to getting information into your memory banks and then back out again is anxiety, and you'd find it very difficult to feel anxious while you're relaxed in hypnosis!
We are generally taught as children to get all anxious about studying and writing exams. Lots of children are taught to dread handing their parent's their school report card every term. This anxiety is transferred to the body in the form of tension, and tension and anxiety does not help at all. This tension and anxiety is often carried through to adulthood.
Hypnosis has shown that the sub-conscious mind remembers everything. Everything that you have ever experienced is filed away in the sub-conscious mind. It's impossible to forget anything with the subconscious mind. For this reason you may have heard of the police using forensic hypnosis to help a witness remember a number plate or some other important detail while solving a crime.
Using hypnosis it's very easy to condition the mind to be relaxed and focussed while studying and to be relaxed and focussed while writing exams. Just the lack of tension makes a tremendous difference, but other techniques in hypnosis are easily used to further enhance memory and recall while in hypnosis.

Hypnosis really works!

Some feedback for you..

"So far I have lost 10kg and go to gym 6 days a week. I have made a total lifestyle change and am more disciplined. After seeing you the Festive season was a breeze and I did not overeat even once. As suggested my weight loss is a main focus and I now believe that I am good enough to be skinny. I even said something that surprised my husband.. I said (about buying clothes for myself from a specific chain store) "these are not good quality, and I am worth more than that, I deserve better!"
"...the entire session was such an amazing experience!! I am a completely different person – people around me comment on this all the time. Before I came for the session, there was not one morning where I woke up feeling good, healthy and ready for the new day. That is all different now. I must say, it took some time for me to get used to this feeling … I couldn't help myself from thinking 'my word, is this how it is supposed to be, is this how everyone else feels when they wake up everyday?' Boy, I really felt like I had not been living until I went for the session. I was finally able to exhale and not only look forward to my future – but also just embrace every minute of every day. Like I told you, I have tried so many different avenues but nothing was really able to help me. That was until I came and saw you. So thank you so very much for helping free me from the ties of my past!!"
"I am still cigarette free today, so I am entirely happy with the therapy and have no complaints at all"
"I am so very much better and am happy, so you are a star. I cannot thank you enough."
"I flew to Austria and back which in total was 23 hours of flying time. I had turbulence, an alarm sounding and small aero planes which look like they would fall apart. I happily flew all this way with slightly sweaty palms at times (very rarely I might add.) Had this trip taken place before I went to your session, I would not have made it through the trip (I know that.) But thanks to your session, I no longer have a fear of flying. I am already trying to plan my next trip abroad. I did not think it was possible (even a few days before I was having my doubts) but not only was it successful but pleasant for me at the same time. Thank you so much for helping me remove this debilitating fear my from life that I had for over 10 years. You have changed my view on hypnosis forever to one that is extremely positive and helpful."
"Thank you for an amazing experience, I am still talking about it. You won't believe how relaxed I feel! I will definitely refer all my friends and family to you. Thank you once again. Have a lovely day."
"I felt very comfortable and at ease and I think you managed to explain the process very well. I also felt in control of the process so it was not as if I am allowing myself into the hands of another person without having a way to "back out" if I felt uncomfortable."
"But what a lovely surprise, this morning when I hopped on the scale, I was 1.6 kg lighter.!! YEAH YEAH it feels great and I am overjoyed."
"I think the entire therapy went well. I am a non smoker. Thanks to you."
"I am 26 and I have major depression since 1997, no one could have helped me, so I have decided to go for hypnosis in 2008 because it was getting worse and I have cried every single day, it's now almost a year later and I can feel and see the amazing difference in my self since day 1, I'm feeling like my self again, I'm confident and I don't cry anymore, even my family and every one around me could see it. Thank you so very much."
"I would like to thank you for sharing your time with me. I could state all the superlatives but I believe you already know that. So here is just a HUGE THANK YOU."
"I have not eaten chocolate since I left your place and it does not bother me at all. Thank you, I feel much better and I have lost 2 kg in a week."
"The whole experience was good and certainly helped me get to the core issue. All in all your work was a tremendous success. Thank you for accommodating me so late."
"Just letting you know what a big improvement the hypnosis has made on my concentration. I do find myself slipping into the old habit now and again but it takes a few seconds to snap out of it which I was never ever able to do before. I am getting a lot more work done than I ever expected. Thank you very much for helping me".
I was at a dinner party last night when it occurred to me that I my life has changed so dramatically on account of my two visits to your office, but you probably don't even know since I haven't got around to telling you! I cannot get over this new sense of freedom that I have around food. I no longer have cravings for anything, and I no longer feel restricted by the rules of some diet. I no longer eat for emotional reasons or out of boredom. I never eat when I'm not hungry or to the point where I'm too full. I don't spend time thinking about food or worrying about my weight. I eat slowly, savoring and enjoying each mouthful. Mealtimes have become an enjoyable social and culinary pleasure. The guilt and shame associated with binging has become a distant memory. I am literally a new person, and I cannot thank you enough!
I want to thank you again for everything that you did for me, I have more self confidence, I'm doing great in the weight department and feeling great, I stick to my eating plan and feel that something is working.
Thank you so much for helping me to put my life back together, I finally and enough courage to speak up and tell my husband that I had enough of everything that was going wrong.
I had a hypnosis session with you last week Wednesday, so just wanted you to know that I am on my seventh smoke-free day – I am ecstatic that I am a non-smoker, thank you so much.
I've had the hypnosis about a month ago for weight loss. The first week I felt a bit more positive... but that was about it. At week 2 I couldn't believe myself starting to just want to eat healthy and losing weight. This feeling is just getting stronger as I go along... is that how it works???? I even bought myself an Orbitrek and started exercising!! I just want to tell you, I was a bit sceptic at first... but boy oh boy, I have lost 6kg in just 4 weeks!!!! And the best of all is that I'm not dieting... I still drink my sugar in my coffee and I do still have that chocolate once in a while... it is absolutely fabulous!!! Oh and yes, I only stopped at McDonalds in the 3rd week after hypnosis and yes, I didn't bought a burger but a wrap!!!! Fabulous I tell you... So yes, basically I just want to say: YES, HYPNOSIS REALLY WORKS!!!!!
I've now lost almost 15kg now, and is still losing. Only 3.5kg from my goal weight, and I feel really awesome. Thanks again!

Allow me to help you to take control of your life.

Frequently asked questions about Hypnosis

Is Hypnosis Safe? Yes! Hypnosis is a very safe, simple and naturally occurring process or state. Generally, people really enjoy the hypnosis process.
Will I lose control when using hypnosis? No. This is a common misconception about hypnosis. Nobody can be hypnotised against their will. Hypnosis is a 100% consent state. Nobody can be forced to do anything against their will. The 'control' misconception appears to originate from stage hypnosis which funnily enough also involves people doing exactly what they want to be doing.
Will I be asleep when hypnotised? You will not be asleep when hypnotised. Hypnosis is generally a very relaxed state but it is not sleep. Many people after a session of hypnosis don't believe that they were hypnotised at all but that comes from misconceptions about just what a 'trance' in fact is.
Will I be able to wake up and come out of the trance? Yes! Hypnosis is not sleep. In hypnosis you are alert and in control. If you want to come out of hypnosis you simply choose to do that.
Will I blab out secret information under hypnosis? No! You cannot be forced to say or do anything under hypnosis that you don't want to. Remember that you are completely in control and empowered. If this was not the case, don't you think the police would just hypnotise their suspects and get them to 'tell the truth'?
Can anyone be hypnotised? All normal people can be hypnotised. All it takes is intelligence, communication and consent. If you are intelligent enough to follow the hypnotists directions, and if you are communicating effectively with the hypnotist so you can follow the directions and you give your full consent, hypnosis is remarkably easy and quick.
Do I have to believe in hypnosis for it to work? No. The degree of hypnotisability is completely unrelated to the degree of belief in it, the same as you don't have to believe in electricity for it to work. If you don't want to be hypnotized then you won't be.
How many sessions do I need? It all depends on how much information you need to resolve in your consciousness. If there is a small amount of information, you'll need fewer sessions than if there is a lot of info that needs to be resolved. A watched pot never boils, and for the same reason it's not a good idea to put yourself under any pressure to perform quickly. The more committed you are to doing whatever is necessary for your healing, the faster the work goes.
What is hypnosis? Very basically, hypnosis it is a natural state of heightened suggestibility and a communication tool between our intellect and our subconscious mind.
Will Hypnosis help me to stop smoking or lose weight? Yes! Hypnosis has been found to be highly effective in helping people change their habits if they have a genuine desire to change. These findings are backed up by scientific research.
What else can hypnosis help me with? Stress Reduction, Self-Confidence, Motivation, Sport Performance, Memory Improvement, Depression Resolution, Phobia Removal, Fear Removal, Public Speaking, Pain Management, Diabetes Support, Cancer Support, Male Impotence, Alcohol Free, Regression, Past Life Regression, Metaphysical Growth, and much more!
