Does Hypnosis Really Work?

One of the most common questions I get asked is if hypnosis really works.

Ben* sat down in my comfortable chair. He told me how desperately he wanted to stop smoking. He said that he had tried everything from willpower through pills and even acupuncture. Hypnosis was his last option. He was desperate.

After we spoke a little bit about his habit and how to change it, I guided him into the hypnotic process. I gave him instructions for relaxation and saw that he was following my suggestions. It wasn't long before Ben started snoring lightly, as if he was asleep.

I however knew that he was not asleep, this is one of the most common misconceptions that people have about hypnosis. The fact that he was snoring a bit only meant his throat as really relaxed. I asked him a questions and instructed him to move a finger if he was ready to proceed. For a few moments nothing happened, and then the finger moved. Ben was in a deep hypnotic trance.

Hypnosis is not sleep. It is in fact a combination of deep relaxation and very sharp concentration.

I continued with the session and retrained Ben's subconscious mind to believe that he was now a natural non-smoker. It took about forty minutes to go through the hypnotic part of the session  and when he emerged at the end, he opened his eyes and the first words out of his mouth was: "I am now a natural non-smoker!"

Almost two years later I received an email from Ben, explaining what happened when he left the session. He told me that he has completely lost the urge to smoke, very rarely thinks about smoking and found it very easy to replace the bad habit with new, healthy habits. He thanked me for changing his life and has since recommended my services to quite a number of his friends and work colleagues.

Can you be hypnotised? Most people think they can't. They are often suspicious that being hypnotised will label them as being weak-willed, naive or stupid, or are afraid that they will lose control. In fact modern research shows that in order to be hypnotised you need to be intelligent, be able to focus and concentrate. It is not an all-or nothing phenomenon, but rather a process. Most people can be hypnotised to some degree - the only question is how far.

A hypnotic trance is not therapeutic in and of itself. It is the specific suggestions and imagery given to a client in trance that can make a big on their future behaviour. By rehearsing future behaviour, a client lays the groundwork for powerful change in their future actions. A smoker for instance might be told that he or she will completely forget about smoking, or that smoking will smell and taste horrible, or that they will have an urge to break cigarettes in two. They will have an opportunity to imagine themselves in the future as a non-smoker, rather using new and healthy habits.

Research over the fast twenty years has proven that hypnotic techniques are safe and effective. And while most people associate hypnosis with stopping smoking or weight loss, there are in fact literally thousand of issues and problems that hypnosis can successfully address. Controlling headaches, giving painless birth, help with study and concentration, relieving phobias and fears and even being used as anesthesia - without medicine or side effects - are just some of the things hypnosis can effectively be used for.

More and more people are starting to reognise the value of this technique and using it. So if anybody asks me if hypnosis really works, I do not answer with a loud "Yes!" just because I have read the research, I answer with a loud "Yes!" because I see it working on a daily basis in my practice. Ben and hundreds of other people have successfully stopped smoking, while thousands of others have found relief for a number of issues and problems.

Is Hypnosis just Hocus Pocus?

Is hypnosis real and if so what is it?

If I were to say the word "Hypnosis" I am sure a perception immediately springs to mind. Perhaps it is the stage hypnotist, making people do ridiculous things, or perhaps the creepy guy with the little beard controlling people to do his evil will. Perhaps you think hypnosis is hocus pocus and you do not believe in it. You may even perceive it as something occult, associated with demons and the dead.

Hypnosis is one of those words belonging to that collection of words which are so loaded with meaning that you cannot say them without getting one or the other extreme reaction. It is unfortunate that the connotations that a word carries can obscure a very relaxing technique that has been proven quite effective for a whole range of complaints.

If, for a moment, we remove the word hypnosis from the equation and just look at the technique that is used to induce so-called "trance", we will find the most natural way of doing things that can be used to our benefit.

Just imagine finding a relaxing position sitting or lying down, and you systematically relax your whole body, followed by relaxation of the mind. Then, using selective thinking, you can change or eliminate your negative or problematic perceptions, beliefs, habits, etc., replacing them with positive, healthy and life affirming perceptions, beliefs, habits, etc.

Sounds simple, doesn't it? And what if that was the secret to the whole thing, how simple the process actually is. How easy change can be brought about. Just by focusing on and changing the problematic thinking patterns.

Some of this you can most probably do on your own, and have done so many times during your life. Sometimes one needs a guide through the maze of the subconscious in order to make that change.

Is there anything to be scared of during the hypnotic process? Well, as long as you go to a reputable and respected hypnosis facilitator you should be fine.

The truth of the matter is that you have the potential to make positive change in your life happen. And using this tool called hypnosis you can most probably make these changes in a relative short space of time, within reason of course.

You can overcome your fears and phobias. You can have better memory and learning. You can improve the relationships around you and make new ones, find love. You can stop smoking and you can reduce the weight. You can do all these things and so much more, as long as you set your mind to it.

5 Things You Need To Know for Weight-Loss

In our modern society, many people struggle with weight issues due to bad diet, lack of exercise and other reasons. Many people try (and fail) to get the weight off and to keep it off. Here are 5 things you need to know to permanently reduce your weight:

1. There is no magic when it comes to weight loss. Pills and potions that promise you dramatic weight loss will most probably work in the short term, but eventually they are not long term solutions. It took a while to put the weight on, it will take a while to get it off safely. And to keep it off requires a head-shift. And hard work.

2. You need to make a lifestyle change. Most probably you are eating the wrong foods in the wrong quantities. Perhaps you sit all day and never get to walk or go to the gym. A healthy lifestyle will be the only long term solution. This is the way to get the weight off and keep it off.

3. Your emotions and your weight are two separate issues. Until you learn to separate your emotions from your eating, you will not have lasting results. So many people are emotional eaters. They do not eat just when they are hungry they eat because the feel a certain way. Happy perhaps, then eat to celebrate. Sad perhaps, then eat to feel better. You have to learn that emotions have nothing to do with food.

4. Weight is usually a subconscious protection mechanism. Perhaps a long time ago, at a time outside of conscious memory, something happened to make the little one feel he or she needed to be protected. Bullies, death of a loved one, childhood traumas, molestation, these could all play a role. And while you may not be consciously aware what is causing the weight, there is a deeper part of you that will never let the weight go until the reasons for keeping the weight in the first place are not resolved.

5. Hypnosis can help you reduce your weight and make lasting lifestyle changes. A qualified and experienced hypnotist can help you, over the course of just a few sessions, to reframe the reasons and implement those head-shifts required to start reducing the weight and to keeping it off in the long term. It will still entail you making the changes, doing the exercise and choosing the right foods, but because the work is done on a deeper subconscious level, the changes are achieved easier, almost automatically.
